A concept for the upcoming iPhone Duo that scans a Pokémon card in 3D, checks its condition, and fingerprints it by its flaws.

I built Shiny Scan solo in a few hours at Bitrig Hacks, a hackathon hosted by Bitrig and sponsored by Y Combinator. Getting a card graded by PSA means paying for each submission and waiting on the result, so I wanted a free way to check a card at home first.

The upcoming iPhone Duo folds, which makes it a tiny scanner. Fold it to about 30°, lay the card on the bottom screen, and the top screen becomes a light that sweeps across the card while the camera captures each side. The result is a 3D scan with color, surface normals, gloss and depth.

Moving the light shows scratches and bends that a single photo hides. Those flaws also make every card unique, so they double as a fingerprint for that exact copy. Try it below.
